Cartier Love bangles are one of the most singularly iconic pieces of jewelry in history. Theyre highly recognizable, highly covet-able, and highly symbolic. So it goes with luxury goods, this combination usually leads to knockoffs. We happened to catch one such knockoff at our showroom, and wanted to share with you so you wont be fooled by ke Cartier. So, how do you tell if a Cartier love bracelet is real or ke?
First, we go back to the beginning of the Cartier Love bangle story. In the 1970s, when Aldo Cipullo started creating these med bracelets, they hadnt yet become the icons they are today. They were popular and chic, but werent stamped with serial numbers. Counterfeiters seized this absence of i.d. as an opportunity to start churning out kes at a rapid rate. In ct, its estimated that up to half of the Love bracelets from the 70s are replicas.
For this reason, we wont even buy vintage Cartier Love bangles unless theyve been authenticated by Cartier itself theres simply no fool-proof way to tell a good ke from the real deal.
Of course, today, the Google query of Cartier Love bracelets ke vs real? is easily answered. Cartiers modern Love bangles are stamped not only with serial numbers, but with the Cartier logo and copyright, the 18kt gold 750 stamp, and a hallmark. Most ke Cartier love bracelets will only imitate the stamps partially, and not very well at that. Well use this as our first example of how to spot a ke Cartier Love bracelet.
Note that the stamps arent identical (the ke mistakenly puts the smudged Cartier logo on both sides and uses an 18kt stamp instead of Cartiers 750) and the kes (on the right) are done sloppily and unevenly. The authentic Cartier love bracelets stamping is crisp, level and easily legible.
Another good clue is the color of the Love bangle. Cartier Love bracelets are made in yellow gold, white gold, rose gold and platinum. The options for customization with diamonds in combination with these metals are nearly endless. However, Cartier Love bracelet replicas likely will use sterling silver instead of platinum and white gold, and may use gold plate or ke gold to mimic the other gold colors. Any diamonds would likely be imitation as well. If the Love bangle in question has a brassy or chrome like quality to its color (or any tarnish around the stamps in the case of white metal), its a ke.
If you take a look at the screw stamps, youll see the screws on the ke are all wrong. The indentation for the screwdriver is crooked on some, uneven in others, sometimes it slopes down to meet the outer perimeter of the screw stamps. Moreover, the clean lines of the authentic Cartier Love bracelets stamps all but disappear on the kes screw outlines. See how the outer shape of the screws is softer? And note that the metal outside of the screws has an almost puffy quality to it. The authentic Love bangle, on the left, is smooth and even with crisp screws stamped right into the gold with no compromise of the surrounding metal.
Also, you can see that the edges of the ke Cartier Love bangle are more rounded and smooth than the authentics.
Youll also see this smooth, melded look on the screw clamps that close the bangle. The real Cartier Love bangle has screw caps with the same crisp stamping as the rest of its details. And about the screw it should turn easily with the screwdriver. When we try to open the ke Cartier Love bangle, theres practically no give. The genuine Cartiers screw turns effortlessly to open the bracelet.
You can also take a look at any accompanying Cartier box or bag for more clues, and you can read more in-depth about how to tell if a Cartier box and bag are real here. But typically, your best indicator will be the price of the bracelet even our preowned Cartier Love bracelets sell for over $4,000. So if you see a Love bracelet for sale or online for a few hundred dollars, it is 99.9% not real.

Cartier should have authenticated it, though customers have told me that their SAs wouldnt authenticate (and yes, very frustrating considering they wont touch a keyoud think that would give it away!) Let me talk to Jeff Lee and see if there are any tricks they can think of. The vintage bracelets are so tricky to authenticate, but let me see if we can help.
Sometimes they can just be very difficult if they havent been opened in a while. You can use any screwdriver that will fit though not just the tiny ones that come with the bracelets. One with a longer handle will give you more leverage. If you still cant get it open, bring it to us if youre local!

I have a question about another Cartier line Meli Melo rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces. Does any one know if there are kes/imitations BUT OUT OF REAL GOLD AND JEWELS? Its very likely that Meli Melo is copied by other fine jewelers who arent Cartier, to re-create the look at a slightly lower price point. If theyre calling it Meli Melo its blatantly counterfeit, but if theyre mimicking the style, its just unoriginality. I talked to our owners about this question and they agree it could be correct. Unfortunately because of todays knock offs that are so super perfect we dont really recommend buying a preowned one with out documentation from Cartier and from our experience Cartier will not authenticate anything unless you are the original owner. Even reputable stores can make mistakes (as we can unfortunately testify!)
My mother gave me a lovely bangle 20 years ago that looks like a Love bracelet. It has the Cartier logo inside alongside the number 526. I think its a ke, though, because its stamped 9ct. She bought it at an auction in England without any provenance. Am I right to assume its not authentic? Thanks!

Its impossible for us to say without seeing it (and even then it would be an educated guess.) It could be real, because the vintage pieces from the 70s didnt have the same authenticity markers that more recent models do. The 9kt stamp would make us suspicious too though!
I bought a love bracelet that was claimed to be 18k gold. the stamp on the inside is listed as and in this order
750 19 Cartier R IP 8866 001 (actually a star followed by 001 enclosed in a rectangle) followed by the alpha sign.
Is this gold plated. I have seen other love bracelets with IT0 in a rectangle and the stamp order different. I am very confused. Was hoping you had an immediate answer to this question.

You can take it to a reputable jeweler to find out if it is solid 18k or simply gold plate. However, they may not be able to tell you if it is a real Cartier piece the replicas are pretty darn near perfect.

The Hallmarks have evolved over the years, therefore its difficult to say. Just so you know, I purchased a rose gold that looked and felt PERFECT when compared with the two (while &he screws on the inside were quite different from the real ones!!! It was an excellent counterfeit piece. I probably would not have noticed or known had I not had two real ones to compare it to.
I immediately contacted the seller (on EBay) and he said to return it. I thought that is strange as he asked no questions. The return address was, well lets just say the name and address were different than what was on the delivery package I received and sounded miliar to a name that would be associated with replica items.

I ordered the Cartier screwdriver pendant on eBay from Japan and it comes with the certificate. Problem is that the certificate doesnt have the red Cartier stamp or the cc seal on it. Seller said the store that sold the piece was not a direct Cartier boutique therefore there is no stamping. Can this be true and the piece still authentic? I have until Monday to cancel the order. Its possible that its authentic, for example if we sold a screwdriver separately we might not have any s for it at all. It would be weird for them to sell it with their own certificate though, as the Cartier one is really what matters.

Hi Kay! Unfortunately I cant authenticate your bracelet, BUT I will say that every authentic Cartier Love bracelet requires a screwdriver to remove. It doesnt necessarily have to be the Cartier screwdriver, just whatever one will work, but its a process to remove it. I hope this helps!
Hi, I picked up a screw bracelet that really looks to be authentic. However, when I went to the Cartier website, the mark was different. I read your comparisons of REAL vs FAKE and it seems to be real. The mark is as follows and is very crisp: G750 100 in a rectangle, 20 Cartier with a copyright symbol in the northeast corner of the R, NO4833. It appears to be rose gold, and the screwdriver did not come with it. Any ideas if this is ke or not. It tests positive for 18 K and is weighs approximately 17.5 grams. Thanks for any help!

What your describing certainly sounds authentic, however we cant authenticate Love bangles because of the prevalence of Super Fakes even Cartier stopped offering authentication services instead only guarantees authenticity of bangles bought at Cartier boutiques. We think you can still reliably purchase them secondhand, as long as the retailer passes our L.O.V.E. test.
Hi Liz, Thanks for your reply. I was concerned about the mark on my bracelet as I did not see the marks like mine on the Cartier website. The G inform of the 750, The copyright symbol at the top right of the R instead of in a straight line. Another website I saw said BOTH sides of the bracelet should be marked 750. Mine is only stamped on one side. You are correct that Cartier will not authenticate it. They replied right away and said that.
